They work in concert with the illustrations to give a primitive effect: precisely what the author, Miriam Margolin and artist, Issachar Ber Ryback were striving to achieve. The subjects of the stories are from everyday life evoking a Jewish life and folklore which no longer exist. The original edition published in Russia in 1922 is a rare document which this edition recreates for both children and adults.
